A recent study by Camber Collective highlights a concerning trend: since the 1950s, the likelihood that children will earn more than their parents has declined by 45%. This downward shift in economic mobility has become more pressing with each generation.
While the statistic is staggering, the study also identified 28 key drivers that can help reverse this trend. Among them, seven stand out as most critical:
- Pursuing and completing post-secondary education
- Graduating with a degree in a high-paying field of study
- Obtaining a first job with opportunity for advancement
- Receiving mentorship during adolescence
- Receiving job or skills training
- Completing high school education
- Owning a business
JA Maine and its JA Titan Experience deliver experiential learning aligned with all seven indicators.
The JA Titan Experience is an immersive program where students step into the role of business leaders, managing a simulated company and working to achieve profitability. Over five weeks, students learn the fundamentals of business economics in the classroom, guided by volunteers from Maine businesses. They then apply their knowledge at a statewide competition hosted by companies and universities across Maine.
Through JA Titan, students gain access to mentors, build professional networks before graduating high school, and connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities. They are exposed to industries and college campuses they may not have considered—and many leave inspired to pursue higher education and careers in business.
One Deering High School participant shared:
“I learned a lot and I saw myself get a lot better at JA Titan. I know how to run a business—even a successful business.”
Other success stories include students deciding to apply to college and declaring majors in fields introduced through JA Titan. An Oak Hill High School student noted:
“JA Titan inspired me to not only go to college but declare a major in Marketing.”
Companies also benefit from partnering with JA Titan. Several have seen graduating seniors apply for positions after being mentored by their employees. Thomas College, one of two universities hosting the JA Titan competition, welcomed an applicant who competed on its campus.
JA Titan delivers on the seven most critical indicators outlined in Camber Collective’s research. Through hands-on learning and exposure to Maine’s business community and higher education institutions, JA Titan equips students with the skills, confidence, and networks they need to succeed. Access to this experience supports upward mobility and helps build a stronger, more resilient economy for Maine’s future.
JA Titan classroom experiences run January through March, with the Northern Maine competition scheduled for March 31, 2026, and the Southern Maine competition on April 2, 2026.
