Junior Achievement of Maine, in partnership with MEMIC, recognizes educators for their tremendous work, passion, grit, and perseverance. As role models and mentors, educators empower, motivate, and inspire students to envision a future of possibility. Join us for our 2nd annual Extraordinary Educators campaign as we take a closer look at Maine educators, their stories, their commitment to serving our youth, and the impact they have on students.
For 17 years, Lisa Dow was a middle school math and science teacher. Now she serves as a school principal at Washburn Elementary. Read further to learn about Lisa and why she’s a 2022 "Extraordinary Educator".
What is a mantra you live by?
When I was teaching, my favorite slogan was: “Be Kind!” I had it posted in my classroom. Now as a Principal a version of that slogan plays continuously on our school entryway digital display panel: “In a world where you can be anything, BE KIND.”
In what ways have your students surprised you this year?
My students are always teaching me, and I am so encouraged to see their compassion and empathy towards other students.
If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
I would want them to see the importance of treating others with kindness and respect. Another important skill is demonstrating grit and performing every task to the best of their ability.
Share a moment when you felt most joyful or inspired about the work that you do.
Like most educators, I appreciate a good “light bulb moment.”
Is there a memorable JA moment that resonates with you?
My favorite part of JA Day are the days that follow. I always enjoy listening to conversations based on their experiences.
“I was a mechanic at first session, what was your job?” |
§ “I didn’t realize that rent for an apartment was so high… during the game, I had to live with two roommates.” |
§ “You bought a new truck? I couldn't afford a vehicle at all!” |
§ “Why do we have to pay so much for taxes?” |
Thank you, Lisa for serving Maine’s youth and empowering the next generation! Learn how you can get involved as an educator, volunteer, or corporate partner and truly make a difference.
