Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems

Laureate 2016

Through the leadership of EMHS president and CEO, Michelle Hood, EMHS is well on its way to becoming a national leader in healthcare delivery.

Michelle Hood received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University and a Master of Health Care Administration from Georgia State University. She came to EMHS in April 2006 from Billings, Montana where she was President & CEO of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health Systems, Montana Region, as well as President & CEO of its flagship hospital, St. Vincent Healthcare. Her early career included roles of associate hospital director at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta Georgia, executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Vincent’s Hospital (of now Ascension Health) in Birmingham, Alabama and chief administrative officer of Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

As President & CEO of EMHS, she focuses on healthcare policy and design models at the state and national levels, positioning EMHS to be successful in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. Michelle builds partnerships that work for Maine communities, strengthening the economic and educational climate of the state. Michelle has also made it her mission to reach outside the walls of EMHS to embrace organizations that share our community health mission.

EMHS employees and colleagues have found Michelle to be passionate about her work. She calls the delivery of healthcare services tremendously challenging while at the same time rewarding. She has encouraged the EMHS team by stating, “There is no more noble work than providing healthcare; whether a clinician, physician, administrator, community board member, or hospital volunteer, the work we all do together is very important.” Michelle is working with all teams to accomplish big goals. “I like to describe myself as being able to establish vision and work toward a future state … I am detail oriented and analytical in approach. I enjoy all aspects of healthcare, so system administration is a great fit for me.”

She was recently appointed to the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. She is past chair of the Maine Hospital Association board, and serves on several community and national boards, including the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, and the Vizient New England CEO Executive Board.
Michelle and husband, Russell Hood, have two adult children and two granddaughters.
