Chairman, President, & CEO
IDEXX Laboratories, Inc.
Jon Ayers has served as Chairman and CEO of IDEXX Laboratories since early 2002 helping lead the company through significant global expansion and growth. Since Jon’s arrival at IDEXX, the company has quadrupled its revenues to 1.6 billion dollars annually, and now employs over 6,800 worldwide, including over 2,500 in the Portland area. IDEXX is the world leader in serving veterinarians with diagnostic technologies that provide insight into a pet’s health, uniquely important because pets cannot verbalize how they feel. IDEXX is also a leader in livestock diagnostics and tests that help to keep drinking water and milk safe.
Under Jon’s leadership, in 2014 IDEXX completed a $35 million expansion of its World Campus in Westbrook called the Synergy Center. This 108,000 square foot addition features a state of the art wellness center, including a 12,000 square foot employee gym and onsite health clinic, the latest technology connectivity, and a open work environment with ample meeting spaces but no dedicated employee offices, even for Jon. The Synergy Center also received the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification with its use of natural lighting, energy-efficient systems and green roofing materials, coupled with low-toxin, locally sourced and largely recycled materials.
Jon’s commitment to pet care innovation resulted in IDEXX’s recent launch of a new kidney test, called SDMA, that is transforming the way veterinarians diagnose and treat chronic kidney disease in cats and dogs. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is to pets what heart disease is to human, a critical health condition. SDMA is to pet kidney disease what cholesterol testing is to human heart disease, and can led to a diagnosis and treatment months to years earlier. Jon is the proud owner of three older cats, two of which benefited from the insight this test provided on their kidney health. SDMA is offered at no additional cost to the baseline chemistry panels that are provided to IDEXX’s veterinary customers.
Jon’s love of pets is also demonstrated by IDEXX’s strong partnership with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. Over 4,000 animals find their way to the Animal Refuge League annually and each pet is given the time it needs to find a home, regardless of age or medical condition. IDEXX’s commitment to this organization includes financial and diagnostic equipment contributions as well as hundreds of hours of paid employee volunteer time. In 2011, IDEXX launched its global volunteer program which provides each employee two paid days of volunteer time annually - with over 11,000 hours contributed to local communities around the globe in 2015.
Another one of Jon’s passions is his commitment to health. Jon is an avid cyclist who competes in an occasional race and has logged over 27,000 miles of cycling over the last several years. Jon has completed the Dempsey Challenge century ride four times, and is a generous contributor to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, an organization dedicated to making Maine better for bicycling and walking.
Other organizations that have benefitted from Jon’s leadership and philanthropy include the Portland Symphony Orchestra, where he served on the Board of Trustees for nine years, and the United Way of Greater Portland.
When not leading IDEXX and contributing to the local community, Jon enjoys spending time with his wife, Helaine, their feline family members, and three grown daughters who are now scattered across the country pursuing careers of their own.
