Jay McCrum is a 4th generation potato & grain farmer from Mars Hill, Maine. Jay was born and raised in Mars Hill, the second son of Dana & Arlene McCrum. He is a graduate of Central Aroostook High School and Northern Maine Vocational Institute, with an associate degree in accounting.
Jay and his wife of 44 years Sue began their farming career in 1972 with 65 acres of potatoes and 30 acres of grain. Not long after he got started in business, his brother David McCrum and his brother-in-law Bob Lunney became business partners. Today the McCrum operation also includes Jay’s two sons, Darrell and Wade, along with three nephews, Nicholas, Jon and Jason. Jay’s daughter Rachel and her husband Fred are a key part of the organization by raising seed potato for the McCrum Farm operations. Jay’s brother Barry McCrum is a strategic part of marketing for the frozen potato processing plant, which has seen tremendous growth over the past several years. Jay has seen over 45 crops, learning valuable lessons from each new crop.
Jay is CEO of McCrum Family Holdings, which is one of the largest farm production operations in the northeast. McCrum Family Holding includes a Frozen Potato processing plant and transportation company to serve their many customers. The growth of their business for over 4 decades happened because of the passion of the family and many dedicated employees, which number over 300 full time employees.
Recognized for his efforts, Jay has been named Young Farmer of the Year and Farm Family of the year by the State of Maine and their peers in Maine Potato Industry. Jay and his team have also been named as Supplier of the Year numerous times by Frito- Lay, TGIF Fridays and Cap Code to name a few. Jay will tell you it is all due to a commitment to quality and a commitment to serve the customer. Jay’s simple philosophy on his career was something he learned from his father many years ago. “Keep your head down, work and never give up.”
Jay is distinguished by his passion for farming and business. His contagious enthusiasm and drive instills him and his team with extraordinary energy and dedication to details of the business. Jay doesn’t just set ambitious goals, he motivates his team to deliver those goals and win. There are never “problems “in business, just “new opportunities.”
Jay is committed to his faith, friends and his family, which include his wife Sue, son Darrell and his wife Erica, son Wade and his wife Angela, daughter Rachel and her husband Fred Whited. Jay & Sue enjoy spending time with their ten grandchildren.
